About German Pinschers

The German Pinscher is the Medium Pinscher which stands between 18 and 20 inches at the withers and weighs between 30 and 45 pounds. GP's are active and always alert to their surroundings. They do require some exercise daily to keep them in good physical shape and keep them in a good frame of mind. They bound very closely with their families and are a very loyal pet. They are a clean dog and are easily house trained and grooming them is a snap.
People often mistake the GP for a Doberman puppy or a large Miniature Pinscher. The average person has never heard of a German Pinscher and has never seen one in person. The GP is very different from both the Doberman and the Min Pin. The GP is most closely related to the Standard Schnauzer. They were bred as a ratter and a protector. They are very intelligent, strong willed and can be suspicious of strangers. Because of this they require a lot of socialization to strange people, situations and places as young puppies. This is a dog that requires commitment and dedication on the owners part and can't be a dog that is fed and forgotten.
The German Pinscher can make a perfect companion dog for the right owner or could be a nightmare in the wrong hands. If you are considering getting a GP please take the time to research the breed thoroughly. Read web sites about them and also talk to breeders and owners of the breed. Also be prepared to be put on a waiting list as this breed is fairly rare and a good breeder will have a wait and not always have puppies available.
